Wysong Pet Food

Wysong announced that batched of their dry dog food manufactured during June and July of 2009 have been recalled due to mold. The announcement was made well after the costly, tainted pet food had been sitting on retail pet shelves and already sold to loving dog owners.

Three months after the fact, Wysong tells pet owners not to feed their dogs pet food from the tainted batches. Unfortunately they made virtually no attempt to help pet owners deal with the dogs that had already eaten their moldy food, needless to say, what owners should do to about the potential health consequences their pets may experience as a result of ingesting the tainted food.

Wysong attempts to explain why their pet food is moldy.
Wysong says, “Mold spores are in all natural foods”. When there is heat, oxygen, and sufficient moisture the spores can bloom into mold. Everyone has experienced this with foods at home.

Apparently, the problem with the Wysong pet foods is because of the very high heat and humidity present on on the summer days when these food batches were being manufactured. This combined with a malfunctioning moisture checking device is believed to be the cause of the higher moisture and this moldy food problem.

Wysong goes on to report that their pet foods have been tested negative for a type of fungal toxin called mycotoxins, Mycotoxinswhich according to Wysong are the primary danger in consuming moldy foods.

They are telling pet owners that the only problem a pet would experience from eating their moldy food would be diarrhea, which should clear upon eliminating the tainted food. This veterinarian questions the validity and accuracy of their advice.

Wysong also states that, mold is a ubiquitous problem in all packaged foods and that pet owners with questions should contact Wysong.

As a practicing holistic veterinarian, one must wonder why the company spent countless hours writing about why mold is ubiquitous in our environment instead of actually addressing the problem. The fact is that mold is highly toxic to people and pets! Mold is composed of fungal spores which are not readily visible to the eye, but become airborne and are easily inhaled into our lungs as well as our pets lungs and may lead to serious diseases.

Aspergillosis

Fungal diseases, such as Aspergillosis for example, are very serious! The green spores shown in this photograph are visible under an electron microscope. Many require hospitalization and treatment with highly toxic, very expensive, intravenous drugs and some lead to fatal pneumonia in people and pets.
