Hi Dr Carol,

I adopted a tortie about 6 months ago from the local humane society. She is about 3 yrs old, fixed, and up to date with her shots. She is declawed in the front, and is always indoors. I have no history on her prior to the pound. (she was fixed and claws done before I got her).

Anyway, have been spending money trying to figure out a hair issue with her. She was missing hair on her lower abdomen when I got her, as well as in some spots on her legs. It does not appear to be acne, no spots or sores.

Ringworm has been ruled out, as well as mites, etc. On her last trip to the vet, they gave her a steroid shot, as well as put her on antibiotics for 10 days. I thought that was doing the trick, as I was actually seeing tufts of hair growing back in the hair loss areas.

Now I notice new balding spots on her. She does not appear to be over washing, or neurotic or anything like that. (I am home all day). I am at a loss as to what to do now.

I just want to help her out here, and cannot afford to hand the vets a couple of hundred dollars every month for them to guess.

She is a very well tempermented kitty, and I absolutely love her, she has adapted well. Any suggestions as to what I should do next? Your help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Susan and Lilly Cat
PS: There are no other animals in the home

Email Query About Romeo

romeo

Question

Dr. Carol,

I just got on the net to see if there was something else to help my cat Romeo with his arthritis.  He has been diabetic for almost 8 yrs.  He Was hit by a car when he was younger and he now has arthritis in his hips. Romeo is now 16.  We tried small doses of steroids, but that did not help.

We couldn’t use higher doses due to interactions with insulin.  Aspirin wasn’t strong enough.  He is now on Medicam.  Not only is one drop not enough, but my vet said this medication will kill him.

I will try anything before putting him down.  He has been fully x-rayed And everything looks good.  He is just very still in the back legs when he walks.

If you think this PAAWS supplement will help, is it possible to get one bottle to try?  I live in Ontario, Canada, but see other clients on your site from Canada. Please advise me how to go about getting a bottle.

Thank you very much!
Paula

Dog Vitamins Prevent Dementia

Cats, Dogs, General Health No Comments »

Boosting diets with vitamins C and E may prevent the onset of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome, (CDS). This is also referred to as Alzheimer’s disease in dogs and is associated with aging and mental decline, says Ohio based veterinarian Dr. Carol Osborne. Adding supplements to your dog’s diet may prevent the damage to brain cells associated with many ageing-related diseases, as well.

Dr. Osborne’s research also suggests vitamins C and E may also protect against dementia by limiting the amount of brain damage after a vascular insult.
Her research, conducted with the Veterinary Hospital at the University of Tennessee followed 100 dogs taking part in the PAAWS for Life Program.
The dogs were monitored and assessed for mental recall and cognitive abilities during tests for 5 years.

Dogs taking both vitamin C and vitamin E supplements, contained in the PAAWS product daily were 88% less likely to have senility or dementia four years later. They were also 69% less likely to have other forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s-related, than the group not given the PAAWS supplements.

From my Inbox: Cat’s Severe Mouth Infection

Cats, The Head No Comments »

I live overseas were vet care is very limited. My 2 yr old cat has a severe mouth infection. It appears to be a ulcer or sore in the back of mouth Have tried local vet for over a yr without success. Any suggestions?

TM

Hi TM,
Try flushing out the cats mouth with 1 tsp salt mixed into a cup of water to soothe and help heal the ulcers.

A viral problem may be the cause-be sure your cat is vaccinated for the basics and have your cat blood tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV to be sure he or she is not infected.

PAAWS is a great supplement to boost your cats internal immunty and would be very helpful for your cat.

If I can help further please let me know.

Thank you,
Dr Carol Osborne, DVM

Even Pets can be Victims of Domestic Violence

Cats, Dogs No Comments »

Dear readers,

What follows is an email I recently received. Amelia asked me to help raise awareness of this serious issue. Please share your experiences and rescue-based organizations that exist in your area.

Your Best Friend’s Best Friend,

Dr. Carol Osborne, DVM

Hello,

I’m hoping you can help raise awareness about some serious issues surrounding domestic abuse, in particular the tendency of abusers to physically harm pets when other family members flea a violent situation.

Below is information about Ahimsa House, a rescue based organization in Atlanta that assists with the medical care and safe placement of animals from domestic abuse situations. Do you know of any other organizations like this? If this is a topic that you think would be important to your readers, please feel free to use any of the information below

Women residing at domestic violence shelters were nearly 11 times more likely to report that their partner had hurt or killed pets than a comparison group of women who said they had not experienced  intimate violence. As a result, many victims stay in abusive relationships out of concern for their pets.

The only rescue group of its kind in Georgia, Atlanta-based Ahimsa House is dedicated specifically to the safe placement of companion animals involved in domestic abuse situations.

In 2006, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on the financial issues that were going to force Ahimsa House to close down. Merial Limited, an Atlanta-based global animal health company, responded to the article with a cash donation, allowing Ahimsa House to keep its doors open. The donation also allowed Ahimsa House to place animals in a variety of boarding facilities through a new grant-based system that houses family pets in locations closer to their owners.

Now one year later, Merial continues to support Ahimsa House by donating its veterinary products, FRONTLINE® and HEARTGARD® (ivermectin).  In addition, Merial has partnered with the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine to provide veterinary care to the pets of Ahimsa House.

Those interested in donating to or volunteering for Ahimsa House should visit www.AhimsaHouse.org or call (877) 346-2992 for more information.

Many other states have programs, like Ahimsa House, that are beginning to take shape and thrive to address this growing issue. These include Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence’s Safe Pet Sheltering Program, Denton, MD; El Dorado Women’s Center Safe Pet Program, Placerville, CA; Domestic Violence Project, Inc./SAFE House, Ann Arbor, MI; New Hope for Women, Rockland, ME; Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Safekeeping Program, Alexandria, VA; and Salt Lake County Animal Services Safe Pets/Safe People, Salt Lake City, UT.  These programs are developing an informal network nationwide to meet demand with supply and share best practices.

Ahimsa House’s situation is an example of why it is so important to raise awareness about this cause. A Merial executive discovered Ahimsa House only through reading the story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that explained why the rescue organization was closing. The efforts of a few can help many through the start of a discussion that helps to educate people about the organizations similar to Ahimsa House that are also succeeding.

Flame Resistant Materials and Thyroid Disease in Cats

Avoiding Disease, Cats No Comments »

There have recently been reports in the media linking exposure to flame retardants and Thyroid Disease in cats. Specifically, they have been associated with Hyperthyroidism, a disease in which the thyroid gland overproduces thyroid hormone, affecting many of the cat’s body systems, such as digestion and immune function. Hyperthyroidism occurs in older cats with benign tumors or nodules on their thyroid glands. These cats have voracious appetites yet, lose weight to the point of becoming emaciated. They also develop scruffy, poor hair coats, and often suffer with vomiting and/or diarrhea. There has been an increase in the number of cases of feline hyperthyroidism diagnosed over the last thirty years. Veterinary experts have been unable to pinpoint the reason for this increase but cats that live indoors and eat canned cat food are at higher risk for developing hyperthyroidism.

Pets Help People Live Better Longer

Buy a Dog or a Cat and Enjoy Longer, Healthier Years Together

With the New Year fast approaching, we are bombarded with advertisements for gyms memberships and treadmills to aid our New Year’s resolution to be "healthier." Instead of buying weights that will, inevitably, collect dust in a corner, why not own a pet?
More than half of all U.S. households have a companion animal. Pets are more common in households with children, yet there are more pets than children in American today. There are more than 51 million dogs, 56 million cats, 45 million birds, 75 million small mammals and reptiles, and uncounted millions of aquarium fish.
It is important to acknowledge that these populations of pets benefit and impact our physical, social, and psychological health, as humans.
I know from personal experiences that the animals in my life are therapeutic assets and enrich my life.

Aches and Pains in Pets

Cats, Dogs No Comments »

When Fido prefers to walk rather than run painful joints may be the culprit!

Dogs, cats and other animals can suffer from arthritis just like people and the severity can be just as painful, says Dr. Carol Osborne, a veterinarian in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The fact is: a joint is a joint, and a bone is a bone, whether it’s on a person or a pet. Dogs and cats get arthritis just like we do because the factors that are responsible are similar in both.

It’s a very common problem in older dogs and cats just as it is in people. Treatment methods are also very similar.
