Pet Vaccines: New Standards for Dogs & Cats

Ask Dr. Carol, Cats, Dogs, General Health, General Health, Pet News No Comments »

NEW PRINCIPLES OF PET IMMUNOLOGY

Dr. Carol presents a Web Series on Today’s New Approved Veterinary Vaccination Standards  & Protocols for Dogs & Cats

“Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces an immunity which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvovirus, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not “boosted” nor are more memory cells induced.”

Not only are annual boosters for Parvovirus and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. “There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.”

Puppies receive antibodies through their mother’s milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks of age. Maternal immunity will neutralize the pet vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.

Pet Vaccination given at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8-12 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months) will provide most pets with lifetime immunity.

Miracle Cat Defies Death Chamber

Ask Dr. Carol, Cats, Pet News 1 Comment »

A stray cat named Andrea, from  Utah managed to survive not just one, but two trips through the animal shelter’s gas chamber.

Needless to say, the shelter officials were shocked and ultimately realized Andrea’s zest for life was no joke…

This homeless feline wanted to live!

Several days later, little Miss Andrea got her wish, and is now living the good life with her new loving owner, Janita Coombs.

Utah animal shelter officials are still trying to figure the mishap with their gas chamber.

Diabetic Dog Thrives on Healthy People Food Diet

Ask Dr. Carol, Cats, Diabetes, Dogs, Pancreatitis, Pet Nutrition Comments Off

As a pet owner, do you wonder what you’re really feeding your dog? Was your canine a victim of the 2004 or 2007 Menu Pet Food Recall? Does your dog suffer from allergies? Did your dog get diagnosed with Cancer? Why did your vet recommend a “special” diet your dog doesn’t really like? Are you spending a fortune on your pet’s food?

Pet Food has become a true dilemma for many dog and cat owners! Ever think about home cooking for your pets but worried about making a mistake?

As a practicing holistic veterinarian for many years, many of my pet patients want to give their pets the very best, especially when it comes to pet food. The problem is how to figure out whats best for your pet.

This will be the first of my pet food series on Homemade Pet Diets:

Pawsitively Healthy Homemade Canine Cuisine…made with People Food

Poochys Pork Butts with Black Rice-n-Broccoli Florets

Step 1: Pour 1/4 cup of olive oil in a Dutch oven pot

Step 2: Sear two, three pound Organic Pork Butts, preferably the BONELESS CUT Ends, in a Dutch Oven and sear them on both sides until brown.
This also releases the porks natural flavors and juices.

Step 3: Add 4 Cups of distilled or filtered water to the seared pork.

Step 4: Place your Covered Dutch Oven containing the seared pork butts and water in your oven and cook (covered) at 350 degrees for 4 hours.

Step 5: After four hours the Pork will easily shred. Shred the pork and then add the 16 ounces of black rice. There will be flavored water and natural tasty juices left over in the Dutch oven that haven’t evaporated because the tight fitting lid retains the juices and flavor.

Pet Longevity Tips for Dogs and Cats

Ask Dr. Carol, Avoiding Disease, Cats, Dogs, General Health, General Health, Pet News, Pet Nutrition 5 Comments »

Pet Longevity is attributed to 70% to lifestyle and 30% to genetics. Up to 90% of diseases in pets are due to the degenerative processes associated with aging. Research validates the fact that optimal nutritional supplementation can help deter and slow the pet aging process, stay active longer and enhance his or her quality of life.

Balanced pet diets are essential, but alone they cannot provide your dog or cat with the optimal levels of nutrients his body needs. In fact, for example, just to obtain adequate levels of vitamin E, your dog would need to eat 5000 calories-a-day. Consuming this many calories is detrimental to your dog’s health and could quickly lead to obesity and several other canine and feline health-related problems.

Signs of Pet Aging in Dogs and Cats:
To determine whether or not a pet is old, it’s important to distinguish between chronological and biological age. Chronological age is determined by the year in which your pet was born or the number of candles on your pet’s birthday cake.

Pet Aging begins at maturity; when your pet’s body’s systems start to slow down-when cells deteriorate faster than the body can repair them. It is a progressive decline in mental and physical functioning and appearance.

Signs of pet aging occur slowly. Their detection requires a pet owners close observation and keen eye.

Before beginning your pets longevity program use Dr. Carol’s pet anti-aging checklist to identify signs of aging in your pet. Re-evaluate your pet 30-60 days later and decide for yourself.

* Weight Gain or Change in Appetite
* Changes in Skin and Hair Coat
* Excess Shedding
* Increased Urination
* Limping or loss of mobility
* Bad Breath
* Vision and/or Hearing Loss
* Behavioral Changes
* Decline in mental alertness, senility
* Loss of house training

Dr.Carol Osborne, DVM, is a pioneer in pet anti-aging medicine and longevity research for dogs and cats. Pet Diabetes Alert: Vetsulin Law Suit

Ask Dr. Carol, Cats, Diabetes, Diabetes, Dogs, Pet News Comments Off

Fellow Pet Lovers,

I wanted to share the latest update regarding Pet Diabetes and the Vetsulin Class Action Law Suit. The FDA has finally announced the fact that the Vetsulin Critical Need Program and Vetsulin is no longer available to treat pet diabetes in dogs or cats.

Veterinarians and diabetic pet owners must now transition their dogs and cats to another type of  insulin. For the vast majority of diabetic dogs and diabetic cats, DNA based insulin, available in a variety of formulations is available through veterinarians, at Walmart, as well as at most local pharmacies.

The law firm handling the Vetsulin Law Suit for affected Diabetic Pets asked me to share this letter:

The $29 Million Dollar Vetsulin Class Action Law Suit is being handled by the law firm Murry & Murray Co., L.P.A. Richard Kerger serves as legal counsel for diabetic pet owners affected by Vetsulin in an action pending in the Federal Court in Toledo, Ohio in which pet owners whose diabetic pets were injured by defective Vetsulin have sued the manufacturer, Intervet Schering-Plough and it’s parent company, Merck.

This has been filed as a $29 Million Dollar Vetsulin Class Action Law Suit, however discussions are currently underway which may lead to a resolution of this matter on an individual, rather than class basis.

The owners of diabetic pets adversly affected by Vetsulin may be able to recover part or all the expences they incurred.  Adverse Vetsulin effects diabetic pets may have suffered include blindness, cataracts, kidney and/or liver failure, and death. Diabetic pet owners must contact the law firm at Kergerlaw.com ASAP, before Vetsulin settlement discussions have ended.

Merrick Pet Treats Recall Alert

Ask Dr. Carol, Cats, Dogs, Pet Nutrition, Zoonotic Diseases 2 Comments »

Taffy pet chews manufactured by Merrick Pet Care have been recalled due to possible Salmonella bacterial contamination.

Merrick Pet Care of Amarillo, Texas, issued the recall of Jr. Texas Taffy pet treats (UPC 02280827077, all lots up to and including No. 10364) because these pet treats may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

The Jr. Texas Taffy pet chews were shipped to pet distributors and pet retailers from coast to coast across the country.

Pet owners who have purchased the tainted Jr. Texas Taffy pet treats can return the unused portions to the place of purchase for a full refund, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Pet owners with questions about the tainted pet treats may contact Merrick directly at 1-800-664-7387.

Salmonella bacteria are highly contagious and are transmissible to other pets and as well as people. Pet Diarrhea with or without blood and vomiting are the cardinal signs. The diarrhea can be quite severe, leading to dehydration which without treatment may be fatal.

Pets sickened and/or suspected of ingesting these treats should be taken to their veterinarian and people experiencing any symptoms should see their physician.

Salmonella Therapy involves medications to clear the diarrhea, fluid replacement to promote normal hydration and nursing care to restore normal health for pets and people. Hospitalization is required in many cases.

Salmonella pet infections in dogs and cats can cause signs which can include lethargy and diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only have a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise apparently healthy pets can be asymptomatic carriers and spread Salmonella bacteria to other animals and people.

Pet owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their dog and/or cat may have consumed or come into contact with the recalled pet chews.

Salmonella is considered to be a Zoonotic Disease which means it may be transmitted from pets to people. Pet owners who may have touched the tainted treats and/or contacted the any surfaces exposed to them are at risk of becoming infected with Salmonella bacteria.

Avoid possible Salmonella contamination by practicing proper hygiene. Washing your hands well and disinfecting pet bowls with bleach is helpful to minimize contamination and spread of this bacteria.

Careful disposal of the pet treats in a covered trash receptacle is also recommended to prevent potential spread of this zoonotic bacteria.

Pet owners and household members especially at risk include the elderly, immune compromised individuals and infants.

Signs of  Salmonella infections in people may include:  nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Salmonella bacterial infections can also become more severe and result in arterial infections, heart infections referred to as endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.  People  exhibiting these signs after having contact with the recalled pet chews should contact their health care provider ASAP.

Pet owners who have purchased the Jr. Texas Taffy pet chews can return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Consumers can contact Merrick Pet Care at 800-664-7387, Monday-Friday, 8-5 CST.
