Most of us are familiar with the heroic efforts our military working dogs provide both in the United States and abroad. Thanks to John Burnham, a decorated Vietnam War Veteran dog handler, the US Government, and Barack Obama, a national monument is being erected in their honor.

The US Working Dog Teams National Monument, honoring all four legged service members since World War II, will be unveiled at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California this upcoming New Year’s Day.

The bronze sculpture features a nine foot tall military dog handler surrounded by a circle of four, five feet tall bronze working dogs.

The monument which was also designed by Burnham is being sculpted by Paula B. Slater who was thrilled to be chosen for the task.

Following its national debut in Pasadena, the monument will be moved to its permanent home at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Lackland was chosen because it serves as our countries headquarters for training these military dogs which work in teams for the US Army, Navy, Marines,

Air Force and Coastguard.
